What Is a Birth Doula?

A Birth Doula is a trained caregiver who offers continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a birthing person and their partner or family throughout labor and delivery. Doulas are there to help you feel confident, supported, and empowered during one of life’s most transformative experiences.

In addition to hands-on comfort measures like massage, breathing techniques, positioning, and relaxation strategies, a Doula also helps facilitate clear communication between you and your medical team—ensuring you have the information you need to make informed choices about your care.

Whether it’s offering encouragement, helping labor progress, or simply being a calming, reassuring presence, a Doula’s role is to walk with you every step of the way, creating a safe and supportive space for your birth journey.

What can’t Doula’s do?

While Doulas are an essential part of the birth and postpartum experience, it's important to understand their role in relation to clinical care.

Doulas do not perform medical tasks—this includes procedures like checking blood pressure, monitoring fetal heart tones, or performing vaginal exams. Their role is non-medical but deeply supportive in other crucial ways.

A Doula provides physical comfort, emotional reassurance, and helps bridge communication between you, your care team, and medical providers. While a Doula doesn’t make decisions for you or speak on your behalf, they empower you with the tools and confidence to advocate for yourself.

They will:

  • Help you gather information so you can make informed decisions

  • Discuss your preferences and concerns in a safe, judgment-free space

  • Encourage open communication between you, your partner, and your care team

  • Offer suggestions and options to consider, without giving medical advice

Think of your Doula as a trusted guide—someone who supports your choices, respects your voice, and helps you feel more prepared, informed, and emotionally grounded throughout your journey.
